When most people hear mental disorders, they might think of “crazy.” The bad stigma is still very ingrained in many societies. It is sad when people with mental disorders are often associated with a lack of faith. Mental disorders are brain disorders that cause disruptions in thinking, behaviour, energy, and emotions, making life difficult as usual. So, awareness of mental disorders is needed to help them recover.

Mental health is a state in which each individual fulfils their potential by coping with life’s pressures, working productively, and contributing to the environment. Mental health must be maintained both physically and psychologically. Of greater concern at present is a group that is fairly highly vulnerable to mental disorders or depression, both among adults and adolescents.

Many factors affect mental health, including genetic factors, hormonal changes, traumatic experiences, romance, friendships, and family and life pressures. Symptoms that arise include irritability, hopelessness, low self-esteem, feelings of anxiety and over-concern. Each individual must realize mental health awareness to prevent various negative effects from occurring. What, then, makes awareness of mental disorders so important? Mental health is still a stigma for some Indonesians. Lack of mental health education leads people with mental disorders to be judged as insane or demon-possessed. Many also think that people with psychiatric problems are not close to God. Instead of a doctor, they often use traditional healers or alternative medicine.

We must understand that mental disorders can affect anyone without exception. And mental disorders have nothing to do with faith or Satan. A mental illness is a disease of the brain. Mental health disorders are still heavily stigmatized, leading patients with these disorders to hide and avoid treatment even if mental disorders can be helped in the right way and with the right consistency.

 

By raising awareness of mental disorders, we hope families and communities will learn and recognize that mental disorders can be treated through medication. Communities will learn to work together to create an environment where those affected can feel welcome so that they can become healthy and return to society.
